Success: Dakota Access Pipeline Construction Permit Revoked

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Applaud the withdrawal of the Dakota Access Pipeline construction permit near Sioux land.

The Army Corp of Engineers has revoked a construction permit for a key portion of the Dakota Access Pipeline near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in a reversal of a previous ruling allowing pipeline construction to proceed. The revoked permit is for construction on Army Corps Land at Lake Oahe, just north of the Standing Rock Reservation. This move which come after weeks of protest, political pressure from First Nations, Native American, and environmental groups and communities, and ForceChange petitions such as “Stop Dangerous, Toxic Crude Oil Pipeline.”

In addition to revoking the permit, the Army Corp of Engineers, directed by the Obama administration, has announced formal government-to-government talks with Native Americans. The purpose of these talks is to determine how best to seek their input regarding infrastructure projects passing through or near their communities.

While the withdrawal of this construction permit will not completely halt pipeline construction, it does present a serious obstacle to completing the project. Sign our petition and applaud the withdrawal of the Dakota Access Pipeline Construction permit and demand an end to future pipelines.

Dear President Obama,

I was pleased to hear that the Army Corp of Engineers has revoked the Energy Transfer Partner construction permits at Oahe Lake, north of the Standing Rock Reservation. I believe that your administration’s commitment to reforming how the federal government consults Native American communities is an important step toward greater autonomy for indigenous peoples in America and climate justice. Furthermore, halting this pipeline will help America live up to its commitments under the Paris agreement.

However, more can still be done. While withdrawing the construction permit may postpone construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline, it will not end it and its threat to the local water quality, environment, and climate. I urge you to do everything in your power to end this project.
