Target: Libby Schaaf, Mayor of Oakland
Goal: Bring in citizen oversight as well as outside agencies to monitor and reform the Oakland Police Department.
Multiple current or former Oakland police officers are being charged related to sexual contact they allegedly had with an underage girl. The charges include both felonies and misdemeanors ranging from oral sex with a minor to engaging in prostitution, soliciting sex for illegal favors, engaging in lewd acts in public, obstruction of justice and misusing computer databases. Many officers also reportedly engaged in sexual contact with the underage girl online, which the law currently does not address.
The cases represent one of the broadest prosecutions of police officers in Bay Area history. Despite these horrific charges, Oakland city officials said that just four officers would be fired and seven would be suspended without pay.
The Oakland Police Department has been the subject of many controversies throughout the years involving similar cases as well as cases of police brutality. It’s obvious there are numerous problems within the department that are not being addressed. With the recent spotlight in issues within the criminal justice and policing systems and amid this most recent disgusting scandal, demand that a citizen oversight group is implemented and that social justice agencies are brought in to reform the Oakland Police Department.
Dear Mayor Schaaf,
Your police department, after being on watch for the last 15 years due to major crimes committed by its officers, is engulfed in yet another scandal involving sex with an underage girl and obstructing justice. Multiple officers are involved with a variety of charges that suggest they operated under the assumption that they would never get caught or turned in by fellow officers and that they would never face consequences for their actions.
Since the department has been involved in multiple controversies in recent years, including issues of police brutality, it is vital that you take a strong stance against these problems within the department. I demand you bring in outside groups to monitor and reform this department so they can protect and serve as they are supposed to do.
