Target: Alliance Defending Freedom President Alan Sears
Goal: Drop transphobic lawsuit against school for letting a transgender girl be with other girls and stop all similar suits.
An anti-LGBT group is suing a high school for respecting the needs and identity of a trans student. The Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), an organization known for being against equality for LGBT people, repeatedly misgenders the girl in question in the lawsuit and claims that Title IX shouldn’t apply to gender identity. However, President Obama has already ordered that all schools apply this law to transgender students.
The complaints in the suit include seemingly normal behavior such as “moving throughout the locker room to change, dance, or sit” and “removing his [sic] clothing down to tight women’s boyshort-style underwear.” It also describes incidents of “rude” comments and “twerking” and other currently popular forms of dance for girls.
If this student were a cisgender girl, nobody would be complaining about this behavior. Unfortunately, bigoted individuals and organizations like the ADF view this teen as a boy simply because of the parts she was born with. They don’t seem to care that transgender people, particularly youth, are extremely vulnerable to bullying a violence due to pointless hate, nor that being forced to live as a gender they are not is incredibly traumatic and often leads to self-harm and suicidal urges.
Filing lawsuits like this is pointless due to the fact that it’s illegal to discriminate against students based on gender identity under Title IX. All they do is attack trans students who are just trying to live and exposes them to further harassment, yet the ADF files these suits regularly. Sign our petition to demand that the ADF drops this latest lawsuit and stops bullying trans kids with pointless litigation.
Dear Mr. Sears,
Your habit of filing lawsuits against schools for letting transgender students be themselves and not force them to change in front of the opposite gender is as reprehensible as it is pointless. Your latest suit against a school in Virginia, Minnesota is full of complaints about a trans girl acting just like any other teen girl does, including doing completely innocuous things like sitting and changing in a locker room.
These suits are a waste of time due to the fact that Title IX now applies to gender identity. You may not agree with it, but that doesn’t make it any less illegal for schools to discriminate against trans students. All your lawsuits do is increase the scrutiny, harassment, and violence that transgender people already have to endure in a hateful society that is unreasonably preoccupied with body parts that are none of their business.
You have every right not to be transgender, but you cannot force schools to discriminate against trans kids. Stop harassing children by filing these dead-on-arrival lawsuits.
