Target: Andrea Arden, Director of the Animal Legal Defense Fund
Goal: Ensure that allegedly abusive, neglectful dog owner is appropriately punished.
Recently, a man was arrested on charges of animal cruelty and neglect after his dog was found starving on his property. The animal, a golden retriever named Lucky, was so badly starved his ribs and spine could easily be seen under his skin. The 33-year-old man, Sean O’Leary of Coventry, Rhode Island, had also failed to vaccinate against rabies, which is required by law for pet owners. The dog has since been placed under the care of the police, who will nurse him back to health and put him up for adoption.
O’Leary reportedly turned himself in and will be charged with several counts of animal cruelty, but this man should serve a harsh sentence for his offense. Animal abuse is a serious crime, and this dog was near death apparently thanks to O’Leary’s maltreatment. It’s a miracle the dog survived.
No person should be able to cause such harm to an animal they call their pet and walk away with a slap on the wrist. Punishment for the charges O’Leary faces should include jail time, community service, and being forbidden to own any other pets if he shows no signs of cleaning up his act. Sign this petition to ensure that Lucky’s suffering was not in vain.
Dear Mrs. Arden,
Sean O’Leary reportedly turned himself in after his dog was discovered almost starved to death and will be facing many charges of animal cruelty and neglect. Please ensure that punishments for these charges include jail time, community service, and being forbidden to own any other pets.
Lucky was saved in time, but other animals in such circumstances have not been so fortunate. Please make an example of this man to show that animal cruelty can and will be punished to the full extent of the law.
