Target: Ada Colau, Mayor or Barcelona
Goal: Investigate and prosecute perpetrators of vicious hate crime against pregnant Muslim woman.
A heavily pregnant Muslim woman was savagely attacked in Barcelona in what appears to be a hate crime. According to both witnesses and police, the woman was beaten for wearing a niqab, a veil covering the face.
According to Barcelona police, the woman was walking in the city’s Old Town area with her family when a pair of men approached her. The men started verbally harassing the woman because of her niqab and then physically attacked her. The woman’s husband intervened after she was kicked in the stomach. The woman was then taken to a hospital where, fortunately, paramedics determined that neither the woman nor her unborn child had suffered any permanent injuries.
Two men have been arrested for their role in the attack and are being held on suspicion of racial discrimination and causing bodily harm. The assault continues a troubling trend of hate crimes in the city. A recent report from the government reported 215 incidents involving homophobia, xenophobia, and Islamophobia.
Hate crimes are always an inexcusable act, but attacking a pregnant woman is an entirely different level of cruel and vicious. Sign the petition below and demand that the woman’s attackers be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
Dear Mrs. Colau,
I am writing to express my grave concern and outrage about the recent attack on a heavily pregnant Muslim woman. According to witnesses and police, the woman was assaulted by a pair of men for wearing a niqab, a type of veil that covers the face. This apparent hate crime is yet another attack against foreigners, and reports of xenophobic hate crimes are on the rise.
While all hate crimes are inexcusable, this particular offense is particularly heinous. Neither the woman nor her baby sustained any permanent injuries, but this assault could very easily have had a more violent outcome. I urge you to find the parties responsible for this brutal attack and prosecute them to the full extent of the law.
