Target: Senator Chuck Grassley, Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary
Goal: Confirm lawyer Abid Qureshi’s nomination to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, where he would be the first Muslim federal judge to serve in America.
President Obama has nominated Washington D.C. lawyer Abid Qureshi to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Mr. Qureshi would be the first Muslim federal judge to serve in America. However, his appointment must be confirmed by the Senate, which still has yet to confirm President Obama’s Supreme Court nomination of Merrick Garland. If not confirmed by the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary, Mr. Qureshi’s nomination will lapse when President Obama leaves office.
Mr. Qureshi has had many notable achievements throughout his career as a prominent lawyer in the nation’s capital. Since graduating from both Cornell and Harvard Law School, Mr. Qureshi has represented clients from pharmaceutical giants to private schools. At Latham & Watkins, where he is a partner, Mr. Qureshi specializes in health care fraud and securities violations. He also serves on numerous committees. By his fellow partners, he has also been praised for his temperament and kindness. Mr. Qureshi embodies the ethics, experience, and dedication Americans hope to see in their federal judges.
President Obama has taken the diversity of the federal courts very seriously. Since he took office, he has appointed 138 women and 120 minorities to the federal courts. If confirmed, Mr. Qureshi would be the latest federal judge to reflect America’s growing diversity. However, this cannot happen if the Senate does not give him a chance, just as its members have not given Merrick Garland a chance. Sign the petition to demand that the Senate confirm President Obama’s latest federal court nomination.
Dear Senator Grassley,
You have been fortunate enough to serve as chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary, a committee that has the honor of confirming the nation’s federal judges. However, recently your committee has not been carrying out its duty by refusing to schedule a hearing for Merrick Garland and vowing to not do so until a new president takes office.
President Obama’s job is not done until January 2017, when he leaves office. Your job should not be done, either. I demand that you hear and confirm President Obama’s most recent federal court nomination Abid Qureshi. His notable career and temperament embody the type of judge Americans hope would serve them both honestly and fairly.
By confirming Mr. Qureshi, you would be confirming America’s first Muslim federal judge. The courts should reflect the diversity of America, and President Obama has been trying to achieve this. Please help him in this goal.
