Target: Mike Rogers, Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Strategic Forces
Goal: Repair and modernize decrepit nuclear facilities.
U.S. nuclear facilities are reportedly in need of critical safety upgrades. Many facilities, reportedly built as early as the 1940s, have fallen into disrepair and compromise the safety of workers as well as the nation at large. Demand that Congress take steps to either shut down these outdated facilities or repair the damage to ensure the safety of all.
Photos submitted to the House Subcommittee on Strategic Forces show concrete falling from the ceiling of the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Morgan Smith, president and CEO of Consolidated Nuclear Security, spoke of leaking roofs, rust, and corrosion within the facility’s walls. He documented the failure of major safety systems, including humidity control equipment. This is only one of many major facilities in need of immediate maintenance.
U.S. nuclear facilities serve as storehouses for radioactive materials as well as the construction and dismantling of nuclear weapons. These facilities must be maintained in order to ensure national security. Sign below and demand that Congress fund this critical repair.
Dear Representative Rogers,
Numerous nuclear facilities across the United States are in need of critical maintenance and modernization. Many of these facilities have exceeded their life expectancy, in some cases by decades. We demand that you allocate funding to repair or dismantle these facilities to ensure the safety of workers and national security.
The Pantex Plant in Amarillo, Texas is the only plant in the nation where nuclear weapons are assembled and disassembled. It was built in the 1950s as part of the original Manhattan Project and never intended to function into 2016. Without necessary updates, the major systems in this plant could fail and threaten the safety of its workers and the nation at large.
We demand that you allocate the necessary funding to repair and possibly dismantle all outdated nuclear facilities in order to ensure the safety of the nation.
