Target: Kenneth P. Thompson, District Attorney
Goal: Seek justice for the victims of a shootout during a parade in Brooklyn.
Four people were shot during a J’Ouvert parade, a West Indian heritage celebration in Brooklyn. Two were killed, and another two were badly injured; in addition, another woman was stabbed sometime after. The shooting victims were given medical treatment and will recover, but there was no valid reason for such senseless violence to have taken place, especially during a celebration of heritage.
The J’Ouvert celebration is no stranger to violent outbreaks; last year, Governor Cumo’s aide was fatally shot, and there have been riots and attacks in previous years. While none of these were acceptable, this is the last straw. A celebration of heritage should not turn into a violent event.
We need to bring the perpetrator to justice, as well as take action to ensure this is the last J’Ouvert parade that will ever be ruined by senseless violence. Sign this petition to stop future attacks and ensure that the shooter gets the punishment they deserve.
Dear Mr. Thompson,
The two injuries and two deaths at this year’s J’Ouvert parade were a travesty. A celebratory parade should not involve death and violence. Furthermore, this is not the first time such a thing has happened. One time was too many, but this is the last straw.
Please do everything in your power to ensure the perpetrator of this shooting is prosecuted to the full extent of the law, so that those two people will not have died in vain. In addition, please implement and enforce stronger anti-violence and safety laws to prevent future incidents like this at the annual J’Ouvert parade. A celebration of heritage should be safe and happy for all participants.
