Target: Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations
Goal: Increase sanctions against North Korea in the wake of unauthorized and illegal missile launches.
North Korea recently fired three ballistic missiles, continuing a troubling trend of aggression toward its neighbors. Launched towards neighboring South Korea, the missiles were fired without warning and could be an indicator of further acts by the North.
The most recent barrage was fired from areas around Hwangju county, in the North Hwanghae province. According to the South Korean military, the missiles landed in the Sea of Japan. The launch follows another recent attack in which North Korea used a submarine to fire another ballistic missile.
These launches come in direct violation of United Nations sanctions, which were issued in wake of prior attacks by the North. Members of the U.N. Security Council denounced the attacks, with the United States referring to them as “reckless.”
The recent activity proves that current U.N. sanctions are insufficient. North Korea is belligerent and intent on creating conflict, and stiffer punishments must be enacted before an international incident occurs. Sign the petition below and urge the U.N. to increase sanctions against North Korea.
Dear Mr. Ban,
I am writing to express my outrage and concern about North Korea’s latest barrage of ballistic missiles. Once again, this belligerent nation has launched deadly missiles in the direction of its neighbors. While this volley did not cause any damage, it has further contributed to an already tense situation between North and South Korea.
Missile launches of any kind are expressly forbidden by the U.N., but it is obvious that the North has no intention of respecting this ban. The current sanctions are not enough to dissuade this aggressive nation, and I urge you and the Security Council to increase these sanctions before an international incident occurs.
