Save Oceans from Destruction

Target: Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations

Goal: Immediately act to stop global warming from decimating our oceans.

While the detrimental effects of global warming are visible even on land, these effects are several times more prominent in our oceans and have begun to put both marine life and humans in danger. A new study by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, with the help of 80 well-known scientists throughout 12 countries, suggests that the oceans have absorbed enormous amounts of heat and may have reached a point where recovery is close to impossible. According to the study, which has been labeled the most comprehensive report on the subject yet, the warming of our oceans is already shrinking fishing areas, altering species spread, and starting to cause the spread of marine diseases to humans.

With ocean temperatures at record highs, some species such as fish, seabirds, sea turtles, and jellyfish are changing their behavior and habitats. Many species of fish are fleeing equatorial waters in favor of cooler waters to the north or south. Changes in the abundance and reproductive habits of certain species in certain areas is creating a domino effect that sees some species declining due to new predators and others starving due to new competition for food. This is expected to accelerate the decline of over 550 types of marine fishes and invertebrates already considered threatened.

These changes have already started to effect human industries, such as fishing, health, coastal protection, and tourism. If left unchecked, the effects could change the global landscape as a whole, making some areas inhospitable to life. According to the report, the only chance we have at combating these changes is a rapid and substantial decrease in greenhouse gas emissions. Sign the petition below to ask the United Nations to move to quickly tackle rampant greenhouse gas emissions in order to preserve the health of our oceans.

Dear Ban Ki-moon,

A recent report has concluded that the oceans are undergoing alarming changes as a result of global warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions. These changes include the proliferation of harmful microbes that cause diseases, the shrinking of fishing areas, and changes in the abundance and reproductive habits of certain species.

If we do not immediately reduce greenhouse gas emissions, these changes will detrimentally impact the entire world. We, the undersigned, ask you to act quickly to create an aggressive greenhouse gas reduction plan.
