Target: Energy Transfer Partners CEO Kelcy L. Warren
Goal: Stop the use of attack dogs and pepper spray against peaceful protesters of the Dakota Access Pipeline.
People protesting another oil pipeline have been attacked by dogs and pepper sprayed by mercenaries allegedly hired by the company responsible for the construction of this pipeline. Photos of people with bite wounds, dogs with blood on their mouths, and children being treated after suffering from pepper spray have surfaced from the front lines of the Native American protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline.
This oil pipeline is yet another threat to the environment and climate that’s likely to leak all over Native American land, just as many other pipelines have. Not only that, but the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe claims that the path of the Dakota Access Pipeline crosses sacred land that is supposed to remain undisturbed.
For these reasons, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and their supporters have been bravely blocking construction of this pipeline, risking arrest and legal action by the construction company. Their dedication to their land and the environment has now been met with snarling dogs sicced on them by a private security firm. Not only is this an unconscionable response to a peaceful protest, it’s a horrible misuse of innocent animals.
The continued construction of oil pipelines is bringing us closer to the certainty of catastrophic climate change. The Dakota Access Pipeline must be stopped at all costs. Responding to people trying to protect the Earth with this kind of violence shows how little oil companies care about human life. Sign our petition to demand that Energy Transfer Partners stop violently attacking protesters.
Dear Mr. Warren,
Videos and photos of Dakota Access Pipeline protesters being attacked by dogs and pepper sprayed by private security guards reportedly hired by your company have gone viral online. These individuals are simply trying to stop what they see as a threat to the small amount of land left to them, as well as a threat to the entire planet due to the imminent danger of climate change.
Your alleged use of attack dogs and other forms of violence against peaceful protesters confirms in many people’s minds that you care not at all for human lives–you only care about profits. The common people who have to live with the consequences of oil spills and climate change are not going to tolerate this blatant disrespect toward people who are only trying to protect themselves. We demand that you immediately end all use of violence against these protesters and fire the security form that attacked them.
