Target: Garland County, Arkansas Prosecuting Attorney Harris Terri
Goal: Push for maximum sentence for mother and live-in boyfriend charged with horrendous child abuse.
A 4-year-old girl was found abused and beaten, with bruises, a black eye, scars across her back, and other evidence of mistreatment. The most jarring evidence of all was the girl’s response when a police officer asked her name: “Idiot.”
Police were following up on a call from a staff member at a child advocacy center, who reported a young child who was malnourished and being abused at home. Jennifer Denen and Clarence Reed — the girl’s mother and the mother’s live-in boyfriend — were both arrested, and are being charged with endangering welfare of a minor, permitting abuse of a minor, and domestic battery. According to Denen, she had witnessed her boyfriend use a plastic bat to hit the girl, zip-tie her to the bed as punishment, and frequently refer to her as “idiot” instead of her name. Reed reportedly admitted to doing all of these things, although he made light of the circumstances in which he did them.
This child and her siblings deserve safety and love, and these adults must pay for any crimes they may have committed. Make sure this young girl gets the justice she deserves.
Dear Prosecuting Attorney Terri,
An apparently severe case of abuse and neglect was discovered in your area of jurisdiction. A 4-year-old girl, bruised, beaten, and malnourished, thought that her name was “Idiot” after the reportedly terrible treatment she was receiving in her own home.
Her mother, Jennifer Denen, reportedly admitted to her failure to seek medical help after witnessing her live-in boyfriend Clarence Reed refer to her daughter as “Idiot” instead of her name, hit her with a plastic bat, or punish her by zip-tying her to a bed. Reed supposedly admitted to these actions, though apparently he named the girl “Idiot” as a joke and that the plastic bat was a half-inch-thick wooden paddle.
It appears that terrible abuse has taken place, and Reed and Denen seem to be responsible. No 4-year-old deserves to be put through such things, and now she deserves safety and justice. Reed and Denen have been charged with domestic battery, permitting abuse of a minor and endangering welfare of a minor. I urge you to push for maximum sentencing in this case.
