Target: François Hollande, President of France
Goal: Ensure that Muslim women are not discriminated against and are allowed to wear burkinis.
Despite the fact that France’s highest court ruled that bans on modest swimwear such as burkinis cannot be permitted, many mayors in France have reportedly maintained their bans. Burkinis cover everything except the face, hands and feet, allowing Muslim women to swim in public pools. Continuing to ban burkinis in light of the recent court decision is not only a violation of France’s highest court, it’s a violation of human rights that specifically targets Islamic people. Demand the French president force these mayors to obey the court’s ruling.
For example, the mayor of Cap d’Ail said through a spokesperson that they saw no reason to obey the ruling since it was not aimed specifically at their town.
The ruling was deemed a major victory after the bans sparked controversy and backlash with images of armed police forcing women to take off their burkinis made their way around the internet. Governments have long dictated what women can and cannot wear, and in our modern society this is unacceptable.
Laws like the burkini ban only aim to intimidate and marginalize Muslim women, and they cannot stand. Demand that the president of France force these mayors to obey the court’s ruling and allow women to wear what they want at the beach or pool.
Dear President Hollande,
The highest court in France recently ruled to overturn a discriminatory and sexist ban on body-covering swimwear that unjustly targeted Muslim women wearing burkinis. Although this was a major victory for human rights advocates, some mayors in your country have chosen to ignore the ruling and continue implementing the ban.
This is despicably defiant in the face of justice. I urge you to demand these mayors obey the ruling or consequences will be implemented.
