Target: Lawal Daura, Director General of the State Security Service
Goal: Immediately release activist who has been shot and abducted by security forces.
Activist Sunday Chucks Obasi has disappeared after being shot outside of his home by security forces. Being held incommunicado greatly increases the risk that he will be tortured or die in custody. Sign the petition and demand that he is immediately released.
Obasi is an activist campaigning for the independence of Biafra, a section of southeastern Nigeria. Pro-Biafran activists have been subject to harassment and violence from the government.
Security forces confronted Obasi as he arrived home. Shots were fired and Obasi was put into a vehicle belonging to security forces and driven away from the scene. Family and neighbors who came over to investigate the attack found bullet shells and blood on the ground near Obasi’s house. His whereabouts have been unknown ever since. His family has inquired at a number of police stations, but all claim not to have Obasi in custody.
Incommunicado detention makes it extremely easy to deny prisoners basic human rights like lawyers, medical care, and safety from torture. As such, it is crucial that Obasi’s whereabouts be disclosed immediately and that he either be charged with a legitimate crime or released. In the meantime, he must have access to medical care, be granted legal representation, and allowed contact with his family.
Dear Director General Daura,
I am extremely concerned about the fate of activist Sunday Chucks Obasi, who was recently shot and abducted by security forces. His whereabouts have remained unknown ever since, and I fear that he is at risk of torture and ill-treatment. I urge you to disclose his location immediately and free him, unless he can be fairly charged with an internationally-recognizable crime. In the meantime, I demand that he be granted access to medical care, legal representation, and his family, as is his right by international human rights standards.
Obasi, a peaceful pro-Biafran activist, was shot and abducted outside his home by security forces. Family and neighbors who investigated after the abduction found shell casings and blood on the ground near his house, and his family’s inquiries into his whereabouts have been fruitless.
I urge you to comply with international human rights standards in your treatment of Obasi and all other prisoners. I demand that Obasi’s rights be respected and that his safety be ensured as long as he remains in the custody of security forces. I demand that he be either charged with a legitimate criminal offense or released.
