Target: Michael R. Taylor, Administrator of the Food and Drug Administration
Goal: Mandate the labeling of any food products containing GMO ingredients.
More than ever these days, people want to know exactly what they’re putting in their bodies, especially when it comes to food items. GMOs, or Genetically Modified Organisms, are a hot topic in the U.S. right now as states like Vermont pass laws to require foods containing GMO foods be labeled as such. However, there is no national mandate requiring companies to specify whether or not their products contain GMO ingredients. With such a concern over GMO labeling in this country, it’s about time consumers really found out what they were putting in their bodies. It’s time to mandate the labeling of any GMO ingredients in food products, as consumers deserve to know what they’re eating.
Companies like Monsanto, which is the world’s largest GMO producer, will lobby millions of dollars in Congress to keep GMO labeling bills from being passed. Isn’t it a little suspicious that the world’s largest producer of GMOs doesn’t want the public to know when they’re eating a GMO ingredient? It seems that there is something to be concerned about and many Americans feel this way, to the point where it’s become a national talking point in presidential debates. It appears the time is long overdue for there to be a mandatory GMO labeling law on the books.
Dear Michael R. Taylor,
The American people have the right to know what they are putting in their bodies and whether or not what they’re eating is potentially dangerous. This is why it’s necessary to pass a law that requires food makers to disclose whether or not their food contains GMO ingredients. If the American people knew what they were putting into their body, they might have more trust while shopping.
A major concern against labeling GMOs is the cost it’ll have to food manufacturers, when in all reality they should look at it as an investment opportunity. If more people knew which brands contain GMOs and which didn’t, consumers who were aware of GMOs would be more likely to buy more of the products that didn’t have GMOs, which would give those companies a major sales boost. If anything, labeling GMOs can be extremely beneficial to the economy.
To put it simply, folks just want to know that what they’re eating isn’t going to give them health problems or kill them, and a simple FDA assurance isn’t enough for some. This is why it’s time that the FDA mandate that all food products containing GMO ingredients be labeled.
