Applaud Ban on Bullhooks Used to Abuse Captive Elephants

Elephant_McGinn

Target: Kevin de León, President Pro Tempore of the California Senate

Goal: Praise ban on bullhooks that will protect elephants from abuse.

California’s elephants can expect a drastic improvement to their quality of life thanks to the state’s legislature and Governor Jerry Brown. The cruel, barbaric tools known as bullhooks have officially been banned, meaning that they can no longer be used to torture innocent elephants in captivity.

Bullhooks are crude weapons that resemble fire pokers, and they are used most commonly by elephant trainers to inflict pain on these majestic, gentle animals. Undercover investigations have revealed how elephants are tortured and mercilessly beaten with these weapons, usually for failing to perform a trick a certain way or protesting their unfair treatment. It is already unfortunate enough that elephants are used for entertainment, but the use of punishment rather than positive reinforcement during training makes matters far worse.

Now, thanks to the efforts of the California state legislature and Governor Brown, the state’s captive elephants will no longer have to endure punishment via bullhooks. While this is a tremendous victory for elephants, there is still much left to be done to protect elephants throughout the U.S. Surprisingly, California is now only the second state to have banned the bullhook, following Rhode Island’s example. Hopefully, California’s high-profile status will garner the attention of the rest of the nation and inspire the remaining 48 states to take similar action to protect their elephants.

In the meantime, this victory deserves to be celebrated. Show your support and gratitude for the action of California’s legislature and governor by signing below.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator de León,

I would like to sincerely thank you for your involvement in passing the bill that will protect California’s elephants from being tortured by barbaric bullhooks. This action has been long-awaited by animal lovers and activists, and your support is truly appreciated.

The passing of this bill was certainly not a one-man job, so I would like to extend my thanks to your compatriots in California’s legislature and Governor Jerry Brown for working together on this bipartisan effort. By creating and approving this bill, you have all spoken in favor of compassion over cruelty. I hope that you and the rest of California’s legislature will continue to make ethical decisions for animal welfare. On behalf of the elephants that will be spared physical abuse because of this bill, I thank you once again.

Sincerely,

  1. This is wonderful news. It’s about time someone in power stepped up to help the animals. Now this needs to be practiced worldwide!

  2. THAT IS NOT THE DRASTIC MOVE THAT I WANT TO SEE!!!.

I WANT TO SEE “ALL” CAPTIVE ELEPHANTS RELEASED TO A SANCTUARY, AND OUT OF THE AREAS OF THEIR TRAINERS!!!.

  3. Nancy Lowell says:

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Bullhooks are only necessary if an elephant has only been trained to respond to pain.
