Target: Ronald Sibaja, ZooAve Rescue Center
Goal: Applaud rescuers who successfully rehabilitated a toucan found with half of its beak hacked off.
A toucan can sing and eat again following a year-long recovery after it was found with half its beak cut off. The toucan, named Grecia, was found struggling without the top half of her beak after a still-at-large perpetrator hacked it off. After citizens took it to a private sanctuary, professionals from across the world collaborated to ensure the recovery of the strong-willed animal.
Toucans need their beaks to eat as well as to regulate their body temperatures. While this injury would almost always lead to euthanasia, rescue staff found that Grecia was trying her hardest to eat and sing, even with her bloodied stump of a beak. Instead of being euthanized, she was fitted with a 3-D printed prosthetic beak provided by a U.S. company and designed with the help of a dentist, nanotechnology experts, and industrial designers.
About a year and a half later, Grecia is now fully recovered. She has learned to eat and sing again, and has been put on display at the ZooAve Rescue Center. Here, visitors can see the the animal that sparked a national discourse about animal cruelty legislation as well as show support to the organization responsible for her rescue.
This miraculous recovery was made possible by ZooAve Rescue Center as well as the doctors and experts that helped in the creation of Grecia’s new beak. Because of their hard work, this toucan has been given a second chance at life. Dear Mr. Sibaja,
Grecia the toucan was brought to the ZooAve Rescue Center after being found with half of her beak cut off. Staff not only managed to save her life, but to fit her with a prosthetic beak so that she can eat, sing, and regulate her body temperature once more. Recently, it was announced that Grecia has fully recovered. She was placed in the visitation park where people can see her in her fully recovered form and show support for wild animal rescue operations such as yours.
Grecia’s story sparked a national discourse on the laws surrounding the welfare of wild animals. This success not only saved the life of a severely abused animal, but has raised awareness about animal cruelty in general. We, the undersigned, thank you for your work to save this innocent animal.
