Stop Discriminating Against Trans Patients

Target: Ken Paxton, Texas Attorney General

Goal: Don’t let Texas doctors arbitrarily discriminate against transgender patients.

Thanks to language in the Affordable Care Act that redefines the definition of “sex” to reflect the internal identity of an individual, rather than their assigned birth gender, trans patients are now able to have equal access to healthcare like any other American— that is until the state of Texas stepped in. The Attorney General of Texas, along with several other state officials and religious organizations, filed a lawsuit to protest the new language in the ACA and for the right for doctors to turn away trans patients. This is unacceptable and the state of Texas should be ashamed for trying to block health care access to any American. It’s time to demand that Ken Paxton drop this lawsuit and allow any citizen, trans or not, be allowed access to see a doctor under the ACA guidelines.

Ken Paxton and the rest of the people filing the lawsuit claim that protecting trans patients is a religious liberties violation that impedes doctors’ abilities to treat patients. In fact, this is nothing more than an attempt to continue oppressing a marginalized group of people who were just granted a new set of rights. Paxton and the rest of the Texas right would just like trans citizens to continue being oppressed and for everything to return to the “good old days” when LGBTQ folks didn’t have rights.

Dear Attorney General Paxton,

Your efforts to block trans patients from receiving health care is not only inhumane, but it violates the Hippocratic oath. To claim that doctors’ religious liberties are being trampled is nothing but hypocrisy, considering you are trying to deny humans a basic right: the right to health care. The first iteration of the Hippocratic oath is “first do no harm,” and allowing trans citizens to be denied treatment is doing them harm. If you deny people basic health coverage, then they will only get sicker until they die. That sounds a lot like doing harm.

Even if your personal beliefs don’t agree with the language in the Affordable Care Act, you should follow the ethical standards in the Hippocratic oath and allow trans citizens to receive the healthcare they are entitled to. Not only is it a basic human right to receive healthcare, it’s now a law on the books in this country that everyone has to receive healthcare, no matter their creed, gender, identity, religion, or anything else. It’s time to uphold federal law and the Hippocratic oath and drop your lawsuit that serves to do nothing but discriminate against trans people.
