Target: John F. Milligan, PhD, CEO of Gilead
Goal: Ensure that thousands will have access to a life-saving HIV drug.
Top HIV/AIDS organizations in Australia reported that the drug manufacturer Gilead did not consult with them or take their advice when the company submitted a potentially life-saving HIV prevention drug to be subsidized by the government. Demand Gilead consult throughly with these groups before resubmitting so this drug can get into the hands of those that need it most as fast as possible.
Truvada, also known as PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), could help save thousands of lives by preventing HIV contraction when taken every day. If Truvada made the list of drugs to be subsidized by the government, it would have made the drug more available to the people most at risk of contracting the horrific disease, including certain drug addicts, gay men, trans women and sex workers.
The government found that Gilead attempted to restrict access to the drug for these very people who could benefit the most from it and listed this as a major reason for its subsidization rejection.
These HIV/AIDS groups said they attempted to help Gilead with the submission but when Gilead went ahead without their advice, the company knew the submission would be rejected. Because of this conscious error, thousands will suffer when they could have been saved by this drug. Demand Gilead consult throughly with these groups to ensure that the submission is approved and lives will be saved as soon as possible.
Dear Dr. Milligan,
Your company recently submitted for the HIV prevention drug Truvada to be subsidized by the Australian government. Rather than working together with top HIV/AIDS groups that would be obviously interested in this drug, you chose to do the submission without their advice, dooming it before you even submitted.
Now, thousands of people will not have access to this drug when they could have. It’s appalling that lives could have been saved without this failure. Because of this, it is vital that you consult throughly with the top HIV/AIDS groups that offered to help you and that you utilize as much of their input as possible. You have the power to save people who are at the biggest risk of contracting this disease, and you must use that power for good.
