Congratulate California for Banning Orca Shows and Breeding

Target: Jerry Brown, Governor of California

Goal: Thank Jerry Brown and the rest of California for banning shows involving orcas and the breeding of them.

The use of orcas in stage shows may soon come to a permanent end, along with the captive breeding of their species, thanks to a new law passed in California. Governor Jerry Brown just signed a bill into law that prohibits the usage of orcas in stage shows, the captive breeding of orcas, and even the exporting of orcas, to prevent them from being sold to an international buyer who might just turn around and use them for their own performances. Let’s congratulate Jerry Brown and the rest of California for passing this monumental law.

Now, thanks to the new law, we can be absolutely sure that Seaworld and other aquatic animal parks aren’t able to breed orcas in captivity and use them as performance props in order to sell tickets. Earlier this year, Seaworld announced that they were going to end the performance aspect of their orca shows along with no longer breeding the animals. However, despite Seaworld’s positive efforts to turn around the cruel practice that is orca breeding, other aquatic animal parks had no plans of stopping their usage of orcas. Now, thanks to the new law, we can be sure that other California aqua parks won’t be able to use orcas as a prop in their show. Hopefully this new law sets a precedent that leads to many other states following suit, and we can put an end to the cruel practice of orca breeding once and for all.

Dear Governor Brown,

Thanks to you and the rest of California, we can now be sure that California aqua parks won’t be able to breed orcas in captivity or use them as performance pieces.  This is something that many animal rights activists have been working toward for a very long time, and to see California step up to the plate to make a positive impact is simply awe-inspiring.

Animal scientists and activists have known for a long time that breeding orcas in captivity has irreversible negative effects on their mental and physical health, yet it’s only been in the last few years with the release of the movie Blackfish that the public really started to have an opinion on it. Now, thanks to that movie and the impact of public opinion, California has made the right decision and banned the breeding, export, and use of orcas in performances. Thank you California, for stepping up to the plate and letting the world know that the captive breeding of orcas is wrong and should be banned everywhere.
