Target: Director Anthony Ambrose of the Newark Police Department
Goal: Suspend police officers who chased unarmed 10-year-old with guns drawn.
Police officers in Newark, New Jersey have reportedly left a 10-year-old boy traumatized after chasing him with guns drawn. The officers began chasing the boy, named Legend Preston, after he chased a basketball into the street. Allegedly, the officers mistook him for an adult armed robbery suspect. The chase only ended when members of the community made a human shield between Legend and the pursuing officers.
While Legend Preston was not physically injured by the incident, his mother has reported that the experience was traumatic and that he has required counseling. Furthermore, this incident could have very easily resulted in injury or even death for the boy had his neighbors not intervened. It is vital that police officers be able to tell the difference between a 10-year-old and an armed adult. Sign our petition and demand an investigation into this incident, and the suspension of the officers involved.
Dear Director Ambrose,
I was alarmed to hear reports that officers of the Newark Police Department pursued a 10-year-old child with their guns drawn. Not only did this incident allegedly traumatize the boy, Legend Preston, but in attempting to explain the incident, the officers raise serious questions about their competence.
The officers claim to have mistaken an unarmed 10-year-old for an adult armed robbery suspect. Furthermore, they did not question this assumption throughout their chase, and only relented when members of the community intervened. The reckless actions of these officers undermine the relationship between the police department and the community. I urge you to investigate this incident and suspend the officers involved.
