Free Teen Who Allegedly Killed Abusive Father in Self Defense

Target: Trumbull County, Ohio Prosecutor Dennis Watkins

Goal: Free the teen girl who reportedly shot and killed her father after years of horrific physical abuse.

A 15-year-old girl is in juvenile detention after allegedly shooting and killing her father to protect her family from abuse. When she was 14, Bresha Meadows took her father’s shotgun and killed him in his sleep after years of him abusing her, her two siblings, and her mother, according to reports. She’s being charged with delinquency by reason of aggravated murder, but child advocates are campaigning for her release.

Meadows’ mother, Brandi Meadows, describes her daughter as a “hero” for rescuing her from an abusive partner from whom she couldn’t escape. Brandi had tried to file for a protective order after being sent to the hospital 20 times by this man, but the case was dismissed. She was afraid that leaving him without any kind of protection would cause him to attack and possibly kill her or her children.

“In the 17 years of marriage, he has cut me, broke my ribs, fingers, the blood vessels in my hand, my mouth, blackened my eyes. I believe my nose was broken,” Brandi wrote when she filed for legal protection. If anything, Meadows’ father’s death is the fault of a flawed legal system that failed to protect this family from a horribly abusive man who could have killed any one of them.

Bresha clearly did what she did out of desperation to protect her family. She shouldn’t have to spend time in juvenile detention and face years in prison, which would only traumatize her further, for this act of self-defense. If anything, she should be released and given state-sponsored mental health care to help her recover. Sign our petition to demand that Meadows be freed immediately.

Dear Mr. Watkins,

You are currently the prosecutor in the case of Bresha Meadows, the 15-year-old girl who allegedly killed her father to protect her family from abuse. There are records of her mother, Brandi Meadows, attempting to get a protective order from her husband due to years of terrible abuse that sent her to the hospital many times. She has called her daughter a hero for saving the family from this man.

I urge you to drop the charges against Bresha. This child was only doing what she felt she had to do after the legal system failed to grant her mother a protective order from the man making their lives hell. Bresha needs years of trauma therapy, not to be thrown into prison where she is extremely likely to suffer more abuse and violence and come out with her life completely ruined.

Please have a heart and allow this young teen to be freed from juvenile detention. Her future depends on you.
