Target: Oregon Department of Forestry Director Doug Decker
Goal: Investigate and prosecute parties allegedly responsible for starting wildfires.
At least 14 wildfires have erupted in Oregon, and recent investigation has led state authorities to believe that the fires were intentionally started. Though it is not yet clear which fires were the work of arsonists, officials have asked the public to immediately report any suspicious activity.
Investigators do not yet know if the fires have been started by an individual or a group of people. They are sure, however, that arsonists are responsible for a fire in southern Oregon fire that has decimated more than five square miles. Fortunately, this fire has been contained, but several other blazes continue to rage.
Arson, especially when related to wildfires, represents an extreme public safety hazard. “The biggest concern is public safety… [T]he last thing we want is for a firefighter to get injured or killed,” said Oregon State Police Capt. Bill Fugate in an interview with a local news outlet.
Whether this alleged arsonist started only one fire or all 14, such a dangerous offense demands an intense investigation. Sign the petition below and urge the pledging of further resources to find the culprit or culprits.
Dear Director Decker,
I am writing to call your attention to the recent rash of wildfires that have engulfed your state. Investigation into the cause of these fires have led authorities to the conclusion that at least one fire, and possibly more, have been started by an arsonist.
Arson is a serious offense, and wildfires pose an enormous threat to the environment and human lives. I urge you to devote as many resources as you can spare so that the individual (or individuals) responsible for these alleged crimes can be found and punished for the damage that has been caused.
