Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Require states to provide menstrual products in schools, jails and homeless shelters.
New York City recently passed a law requiring public schools, jails and homeless shelters to provide menstrual products free of charge. While this is amazing for people in the city, people in other public places are forced to struggle with purchasing their own products and having to come up with makeshift ways to deal with menstruation if they can’t purchase the products. This is why President Obama must make a law that will require these institutions to provide menstrual products for free.
Now students will no longer need to go to the nurse’s office and will instead be able to get free pads or tampons in restrooms. Officials at homeless shelters and jails claim that they already provide free menstrual products even though it’s been reported that only about half of women are given enough pads or tampons to get them through their menstrual cycle in prison. Now jails and shelters will be held accountable for not providing these products.
Making this kind of law the rule across the country would help thousands of girls and women and would aid in stopping the unnecessary shame and embarrassment women are forced to endure by having their period. Urge President Obama to stand up for women’s rights and make a federal law requiring these institutions to provide these products.
Dear President Obama,
New York City recently passed a law requiring public schools, jails and homeless shelters to provide menstrual products free of charge. This is a huge victory for women’s rights and will help numerous girls and women across the city get the products they need for their periods.
While this is a great first step, it would be even better if there was federal legislation similar to this law in order to help women across the country with this issue. Women should not have to endure bleeding all over themselves in a jail cell or having school time disrupted by their period. I urge you to enact a similar law mandating that these institutions must provide menstrual products.
