Target: George R. Kamperschroer, President of the Madison Police and Fire Commission
Goal: Fire police chief who attacks anyone who criticizes his department, broke department rules and justified the beating and tasering of a black teen.
A police chief defended the use of force by officers who kicked, beat and tasered 18-year-old Genele Laird, which caused community outcry about police brutality. On top of that, Madison, Wisconsin Chief of Police Mike Koval was combative during a meeting to decide whether or not to allocate an additional $350,000 for a consultant to examine Madison Police Department policies and culture in an attempt to reduce police brutality and deaths at the hands of police.
At the meeting, Koval’s anger was evident and he went so far as to strike a table. He even made threatening remarks to the alderpersons at the meeting, telling them his current outburst was a preemptive first strike against them.
An article by Isthmus states that according to Section 204 of the Madison Police Policy Manual, members of the MPD must refrain from “overbearing, oppressive or tyrannical conduct” in their dealings with the public. Koval’s actions violate this very rule, and he must face the consequences.
With the recent light on police brutality and systematic issues in our policing system, reforms must be made and men like Mike Koval cannot hold positions of power. Sign this petition to urge the Madison Police and Fire Commission to fire Mike Koval.
Dear Mr. Kamperschroer,
Chief of Police Mike Koval’s recent behavior has proven him unfit to serve the people of Madison by violating the Madison Police Policy Manual via threatening alderpersons and justifying the horrific beating of a black teenager.
Koval’s recent behavior at a meeting that would decide if money would be allocated to review his department’s culture and actions was aggressive and unacceptable. Koval seems unconcerned with making meaningful changes to a police department that has been largely criticized by the community it is meant to serve. I urge you to fire Mike Koval and replace him with a more compassionate Chief of Police who is devoted to positive change.
