Target: Attorney General Arely Gomez
Goal: Suspend federal police officials allegedly involved in covering up extrajudicial executions pending a transparent, independent investigation.
The federal police killed 22 suspected cartel members and then posed their bodies with guns to make it seem as though they died in a gun battle, according to a report from the Mexican National Human Rights Commission. The bodies were allegedly arranged to support government statements, however the report notes that the government has failed to produce any further evidence to support law enforcement accounts of the events. If true, these allegations would represent a grievous violation of human rights and due process.
Without an investigation, public officials and members of law enforcement involved in this matter will never face consequences. This will contribute to a culture of indemnity and lack of accountability it public office, which will further damage the rule of law and trust in law enforcement in Mexico. Sign our petition to demand that all public officials involved in the alleged cover up be suspended and that an independent and transparent investigation into this matter be launched.
Dear Attorney General Gomez,
I was shocked to read the report by the National Human Rights Commission detailing alleged abuses and a cover up by members of the Federal Police and other public officials. If true, these acts would amount to extrajudicial killings, violating due process and the victims’ human rights. As you are no doubt aware, this is profoundly damaging for the rule of law and accountability of public officials in Mexico.
Given competing accounts of events by government officials, I believe it is critical that an independent and transparent inquiry be opened into the matter. Furthermore, I urge you to ensure that all public officials allegedly involved are suspended so that they may not interfere with the investigation.
