Thank Target for Pledging to Make All Bathrooms Gender-Neutral

Target: Brian Cornell, CEO of Target

Goal: Applaud Target for dedicating $20 million to install gender-neutral bathrooms in all of its stores.

Target announced that it will be installing gender-neutral bathrooms in all of its stores by early 2017. This groundbreaking decision is just one of the recent efforts the retail chain has made to show its support for LGBT communities and gender equality. The store was also recently applauded for removing gendered labels from their toy departments and celebrating LGBT pride with hashtag “#takepride.”

This decision is especially important considering the ongoing debate regarding transgender people’s right to choose which public restroom to use. There have been many cases of trans folks being forced to use the public restroom that corresponds with their “biological sex” rather than their chosen gender identity. This restriction is not only alienating but also potentially dangerous for many trans individuals who find themselves being discriminated against, harassed, and even attacked for how they choose to express their gender.

Most people never have to pause when choosing which gendered bathroom to use, but for transgender and gender-nonconforming folks, the choice can be extremely daunting. Gender-neutral bathrooms are a simple but effective way to create safer and more inclusive environments for a severely marginalized and misunderstood population.

Target’s plan not only acknowledges this elegant solution, but sets a moral example that other chains will hopefully follow. Thank Target for investing $20 million to make all of its customers feel safe, included, and important by signing below.

Dear Mr. Cornell,

I was greatly pleased to hear about Target’s plan to include single-stall restrooms in all of its locations in the coming year. By working quickly to have these bathrooms installed by November, to the tune of $20 million, you are showing your customers that you care about their comfort, safety, and convenience. No one should ever have to feel a sense of dread or fear when choosing the “right” gendered bathroom. Soon, thanks to this plan, no one will ever have to make that choice in any of Target’s stores.

I greatly appreciate Target’s adherence to inclusiveness and equality. By creating safe spaces for transgender customers, removing gender labels from toys, and openly celebrating LGBT pride, Target is setting a standard for acceptance. I know that many small-minded people have opposed these decisions, and I applaud your company for standing its ground. I can only hope that other retail chains will soon follow suit.

Once again, thank you for being a voice for equality.

Transgenders are less than 1% of the population but 50% are being put at risk because of them. Men and boys are pretending to be female to go into the ladies changing rooms, toilets and shower facilities. Sorry, they should not be allowed into them until they are further along in their change.

I support the LGBT community as well as transgenders but not at the expense of women and girls.

    • My physician’s office and other places I visit frequently have only ONE toilet and sink for both men and women… far, no one has been raped or assaulted…….its just a silly controversy, blown up out of proportion by the Evangelicals.
