Target: Chicago Public Schools CEO Forrest Claypool
Goal: Compensate family of six-year-old girl who was reportedly handcuffed and left under her school’s stairs for an hour.
A very young student was violently handcuffed and left under some stairs that way for an hour because another child accused her of stealing a piece of candy, according to a lawsuit filed by her parents. Six-year-old Madisyn talked about the pain of the handcuffs in a recent interview regarding the suit, which alleges that the security guard who cuffed her said he was “teaching her a f***ing lesson.”
Marlena Wordlow, Madisyn’s mother, says that the piece of candy that somehow elicited this ridiculous punishment was part of the lunch she packed for her daughter that day. Even if the child had taken the candy, handcuffing a student for an hour under some stairs is an extremely inappropriate and possibly traumatizing action to take against a six-year-old.
The child’s school has released a statement saying that the security guard has been fired and a “do not hire” note has been placed in his file. However, the school is still responsible for what happened as they never should have hired such a violent man in the first place. Furthermore, Wordlow has claimed that the school system has been unhelpful during this process.
Madisyn may need extensive trauma therapy after such a terrifying incident, and her parents shouldn’t have to pay for something that is the school’s fault. Sign our petition to demand that the school district offer the family full restitution for the abuse of this child.
Dear Mr. Claypool,
A child attending one of your schools was recently put in handcuffs and left under school stairs for an hour for allegedly stealing a piece of candy. According to a lawsuit being filed against your district, the security guard said that he was “teaching her a f***ing lesson.” Six-year-old Madisyn was found crying and terrified before she was released for this gross and completely uncalled for “punishment.”
It’s not enough that the security guard has been fired. Madisyn’s family must now find a new school for her and possibly psychological treatment for the trauma she endured. Your school district is responsible for hiring a violent man to interact with elementary school children, therefore you must be held accountable for the expenses incurred by this horrific treatment of an innocent child.
Don’t ignore your responsibility to the children under the care of your schools. We demand that you pay restitution to this family in whatever amount they request.
