Shut Down Zoo Where Giraffe Died of Anxiety

Target: Lee Ying-Yuan, Taiwanese Minister of Environmental Protection

Goal: Shut down the zoo where a giraffe died of anxiety while being sent to another captive animal facility.

A stressed giraffe died after being loaded on to a truck to be transported from one zoo to another. The seven-year-old male giraffe Hsiao Chiu was due to be sent from the municipal Taipei Zoo to a private zoo, where he was being taken to mate, when he collapsed and died. The autopsy revealed that the animal was suffering from pneumonia and anxiety and that the stress of transportation triggered respiratory issues and muscular injury.

The zoo reportedly knew that Hsiao Chiu was an anxious and “sensitive” animal, having already postponed the trip. Yet the terrified giraffe was still confined to a cage and subjected to the stress of transportation. This comes after a male hippopotamus held at a private zoo in central Taiwan broke his leg and crushed his diaphragm after falling while being transported, eventually dying after being crushed inside a transport container the following day.

Clearly captive animals are improperly cared for in zoos in Taiwan and all over the world. Sign this petition urging Taiwanese authorities to shut down the municipal Taipei Zoo, ensure proper animal handling at other zoos around the country, and take urgent steps to phase out all captive animal facilities.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Lee,

A seven-year-old giraffe named Hsiao Chiu has died after being subjected to the stress of confinement and transportation. The animal was due to be sent from the municipal Taipei Zoo to a private zoo, but collapsed and died as he was being loaded into the truck. An autopsy revealed that the giraffe suffered from pneumonia and died of anxiety, terrified by the transportation process. The zoo reportedly knew of this animal’s sensitive nature, yet decided to load him onto a truck anyway. Clearly this facility is not apt at caring for wild animals.

We are urging you to shut down the municipal Taipei Zoo before more animals die and implement tougher regulations to protect animals in zoos. Furthermore, please ensure Taiwan moves away from captive animal facilities altogether, as animals suffer and die when imprisoned in zoos.

Sincerely,

  1. end the captivity on the wildlife now. justice for the giraffe now.

  2. So sick of hearing animals being neglected, starved, abused and tortured by irresponsible and uncaring zoos. Tougher regulations must be adhered to by zoo owners failing which they must be severely punished and their zoos shut down and license permanently revoked.

Disgusting, obscene and compassion less. These zoo’s need to be closed forever. They are supposed to help and protect these poor animals yet they abuse, neglect and hurt them instead. Is it a case of any backward moron can be employed and directs these zoo’s? If so shame on you all.

  4. Leave wild animals in the wild!! Please!! Shut down all zoos and release all captive animals to sanctuaries. Let the money from selling the zoo property and assets okay for the care of these innocent souls!

  5. Not humane than barbaric, really stupid and worthless criminal and ignorant ASSHOLES, which should be caged for their whole lives! Or not?

THE DEVIL SHOULD TAKE ALL RESPONSIBLE PERSONS AWAY – ONCE FOR ALL !

ALL OF THAT INHUMANE MUD AND RESPONSIBLE NONPERSONS ARE ONLY SENSELESS FOR ALL OTHER TERRESTRIALS – FEED THEM TO ALLIGATORS !
