Target: Chairman Julie Imanuel Brown, Florida Public Service Commission
Goal: Stop Florida Power & Light from raising Florida power rates in order to commission further gas-burning plants.
Florida Power & Light (FPL) is proposing a power rate increase for Florida residents to fund new gas-burning plants. This proposal clearly shows that FPL’s bottom line is their number one priority, and not the health and safety of the local community. Not only is FLP planning to build antiquated and harmful fuel facilities, but they are suggesting that the local community pay for it. It is a slap in the face of Florida residents who will bear the brunt of the cost and the negative environmental effects.
This proposal is in complete contradiction to scientific evidence that shows reliance on fossil fuels is irrevocably damaging our environment and greatly affecting climate change. Our focus should be on production of clean energy that is not only environmentally sound, but economically responsible.
The financial burden on the community and the risk of severe health and environmental effects clearly show this plan to raise power rates in order to double down on gas is not only unnecessary, but downright irresponsible. The final decision for this disastrous proposal falls on the Florida Public Service Commission and their chairman Julie Imanuel Brown. Urge her to deny this outrageous request and continue Florida toward a path of renewable energy.
Dear Florida Public Service Commission Chairman Julie Imanuel Brown,
Florida Power & Light has recently proposed to your Commission to raise power rates for Florida residents in order to fund an unnecessary and likely dangerous development of gas-burning plants in south Florida. This not only puts unnecessary economic strain on local Florida communities but puts their health and safety at risk.
Scientists overwhelmingly agree that over-reliance on fossil fuels contributes to the stark reality of climate change. Our resources should be focused on clean energy sources that will move us toward safer climate. The FLP has failed to show that this rate hike and the subsequent billion-dollar expenditure on gas-burning plants has need or value.
We urge you and the rest of the commission to consider the full effect on both the local economy, environment and your values as residents of the state of Florida. Once done, there is no other choice for your commission than to deny FLP’s proposal and continue Florida on the path of environmental progress.
