Target: Robert M. Califf, M.D., Commissioner of Food and Drug Administration
Goal: Remove dangerous chemicals that can cause serious health issues including cancer from drinking water.
Millions of Americans could be drinking water with dangerously high levels of industrial chemicals, according to a troubling new report. Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, also known as PFASs, have been linked to obesity, hormone suppression, high cholesterol, and even cancer in some cases.
PFASs became popular around 60 years ago because of their durability. The chemicals are used as food packaging materials (especially in pizza boxes), as well as fabrics, fire suppressants, and nonstick cooking pans. Because of their durability, PFASs migrate through the air and into soil, household dust, and food before eventually settling into drinking water.
Once in the body, PFASs remain in the system and begin to accumulate. Whereas other chemicals can be excreted within hours, PFASs can last for as long as three and a half years inside the human body. Their presence can lead to changes in cholesterol levels and can affect the timing of puberty.
As seen in Flint, Michigan, unsafe drinking water poses a major health crisis. Sign the petition below and demand immediate action to get these dangerous chemicals out of the nation’s drinking water.
Dear Mr. Califf,
I am writing to call your attention to a troubling new report claiming that millions of Americans are at risk from dangerous chemicals in their drinking water. These chemicals, known as PFSAs, are extremely resilient and can remain in the body for over three years, potentially causing obesity, high cholesterol, and even cancer.
As the situation in Flint, Michigan proves, access to clean drinking water is absolutely essential. I urge you to investigate this matter and take immediate action to help the millions of Americans at risk.
