Don’t Capture and Cage Terrified Wild Goat for Fair

Target: Paudie Cronin, Lord Mayor of Killorglin

Goal: Do not allow fair organizers to trap and cage a scared and stressed wild goat for three days for the sake of an annual fair.

Each year, a wild goat is captured and caged for entertainment at a town fair. The annual Puck Fair, held in August of each year in Killorglin, Ireland, sees people go into the mountains to trap and bring back a wild goat, which is then kept in a small cage for three days and “crowned king” as part of the festivities.

Animal rights activists are calling on organizers to end the inclusion of a live goat, pointing out that the loud festival leaves the caged wild animal “terrified and confused.” Bernie Wright of the Alliance for Animal Rights explains that while the practice isn’t as inhumane as eating animals, it is still very cruel and displays a lack of respect for other species. The wild goat should be left in peace, rather than captured, caged and traumatized by crowds and noise.

Sign this petition urging town officials to ban the inclusion of a wild goat and replace this practice with a humane alternative not involving a live animal.

Dear Mayor Cronin,

Please ban the use of a live goat at the annual Puck Fair in Killorglin. As animal rights activists rightly point out, capturing a wild goat and exhibiting the terrified and confused animal for three days in a tiny cage is incredibly inhumane.

While this practice may entertain fairgoers, it can be severely traumatizing for a wild animal not used to captivity, crowds and loud noises. Please ensure live animals are no longer used at Puck Fair, and are instead replaced with a humane substitute.

  2. It is unethical to torment any creature for entertainment. It is even more absurd to hold such an event which serves no purpose and value except to cause unnecessary distress to defenseless animals. Please ban it.
