Demand Public Official Apologize for Transphobic Remarks

Target: Bill James, Commissioner of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina

Goal: Apologize for derogatory, slur-filled tweets aimed at the transgender community.

Tweets filled with distasteful and harmful remarks about the transgender community made by a public official not only used the offensive term “tranny,” but also equated transgender women to “boys in drag.” Bill James, a conservative Republican county commissioner in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, used this hateful language on Twitter while voicing his opinion over a school bathroom policy in his county. This is the second time James has referred to members of the transgender community as “trannies” over Twitter.

The slur James used in his tweets is a troubling and derogatory one. In addition, his equating transgender women to “boys in drag” makes light of the gender identity of constituents he is supposed to be representing, protecting, and looking out for. As a representative of people of all races, ethnicities, ages, social classes, and gender identities, such narrow-minded and disparaging remarks have no place in public office.

North Carolina has faced scrutiny in recent months due to its controversial bathroom laws that force citizens to use the restroom based on the gender that appears on their birth certificate instead of the gender they identify with. Unfortunately, James is not the only public official to voice such offensive remarks aimed at the transgender community since the state’s bathroom law has been in place. Many politicians and officials are spewing harmful statements and defending their actions by attacking what they call a growing “PC culture.”

Members of local LGBT organizations in North Carolina, and even local media outlets, are demanding that James apologize for his remarks and that his fellow commissioners condemn him at their next public meeting. Sign the petition to join in their plea and let Bill James know that such statements, whether they are made orally or over a social media platform, have no place in public politics and no place in a society that is trying desperately to be a more open, welcoming, and safe environment for all people.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. James,

You recently took to Twitter to voice your support of an anti-transgender bathroom rule in your local community. While all have freedom to voice their thoughts and opinions on the social media platform, your tweet’s use of the word “tranny” and its equating a transgender woman to a “boy is drag” is not only problematic, but offensive, derogatory, and not fitting of a public official who is supposed to represent all different people.

Members of your community, LGBT representatives, and media outlets have demanded that you publicly apologize. I urge you to consider their demands. You took to Twitter without any regard for the well-being of the citizens you represent, especially the transgender individuals who call your county home. Our country is attempting to move forward and create a world in which all individuals feel safe and comfortable. However, your severely harmful remarks only prevent that from becoming reality.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
