Save Animals and Children From Enduring Inhumane Suffering

Target: Representative Ed Royce, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs

Goal: Restrict cruel animal traps in order to prevent wild animals and children from experiencing unnecessary suffering or agonizing death.

Numerous dangerous traps that are used to kill animals are imported, exported and sold in the United States every year. Tell congress that this needs to stop so that animals and children will not have to experience serious injuries or excruciating deaths.

Leg-hold and Conibear traps are two common traps that are used to kill wild animals. Once stumbled upon, death is, unfortunately, not instant. Instead, the animal usually experiences a great amount of pain as the trap forcefully crushes down. If this isn’t bad enough, the trapped animal often tries to chew off its own limb trying to escape, only to die of a nasty and dire infection days later. Additionally, children have gotten seriously hurt because of these barbaric devices. In fact, six doctors had to work for several hours to free a little boy who got stuck in a hidden trap by a pond.

Making it more difficult to get a hold of these traps is the first step to saving animals and children from enduring potential physical anguish and death. Urge congress to make the Public Safety and Wildlife Protection Act law, which would make the importing, exporting, and selling of these traps or others like them across state lines illegal–and further make it illegal to purchase unauthorized traps in other states.

Dear Representative Royce,

Many animals die every year as a result of getting stuck in steel traps. Obtaining such traps must be made more difficult in order to ensure that more animals and children will not be injured or killed because of these inhumane devices.

When an animal gets caught in a trap, such as a leg-hold or Conibear trap, it usually does not die right away. Instead, the animal is in so much pain that it oftentimes tries to chew off its own leg as an attempt to escape. Unfortunately, this action only leads to the animal dying from a painful infection days later. Sadly, children have also gotten severely hurt after becoming trapped in these devices. One child even suffered for six hours while doctors worked to free him.

Such tragedies could be greatly mitigated if the Public Safety and Wildlife Protection Act is passed. As you know, such a law would make it illegal for anyone to import, export, or sell these traps or similar traps across state lines and it would further make it illegal to purchase unauthorized traps in other states.

For these reasons, I urge you to support this bill and to also encourage other members of congress to vote in favor of this law. If nothing is done, many more animals and children will likely suffer or die as a result of getting stuck in these vicious traps.
