Target: Claudia Pavlovich Arellano, Governor of Sonora, Mexico
Goal: Allow a teenage girl to have a legal abortion, despite the judge’s lenient ruling on her sexual assault.
A 13-year-old girl was denied an abortion after a judge downgraded her reported rape to “sexual coercion.” The girl stated that she’d been violently assaulted by a family acquaintance, and medical evidence allegedly backed up her statement. Demand that justice is served for this innocent girl.
The girl reported her attacker to police immediately afterwards, stating that he had raped her. The Sonora judge ruled against the older man but downgraded his charges to “illegal sex with a minor.” He cited the fact that the man had reportedly gained the young girl’s consent by deception. However, medical evidence shows that the girl was subjected to sexual violence.
Abortion is illegal in Northern Mexico with rape-related pregnancies being one of few exceptions. Despite the judge’s terminology, this girl was sexually assaulted and has a right to abort her pregnancy. Sign below and demand that justice be served.
Dear Governor Pavlovich,
A 13-year-old girl is seeking an abortion after she was reportedly raped by a family acquaintance. Take a stand for women’s rights and allow this girl to have a legal abortion.
The judge defined the reported rape as “sexual coercion,” despite medical evidence showing that she suffered a violent sexual attack. This means that the girl faces up to six years in prison if she chooses to obtain an abortion. Her only other option is to travel to Mexico City, an expensive and dangerous trip.
We demand that you allow this girl to terminate her pregnancy without legal consequence.
