Target: Congressman Paul Ryan, Speaker of the House of Representatives
Goal: Demand that Speaker of the House Paul Ryan un-endorse Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump after his recent derogatory comments towards a Gold Star Family.
Mr. Khizr Khan, accompanied by his wife Mrs. Ghazala Khan, gave what was perhaps the most emotional speech at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. Retrieving a U.S. Constitution from his breast pocket, the Gold Star Father asked Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump if he has ever read the Constitution. Mrs. Khan stood at her husband’s side, her grief and strength clearly visible on her face.
Mr. and Mrs. Khan lost their son Captain Humayun Khan in Iraq in 2004. He was killed by a car bomb after ordering his soldiers and others away from the suspicious vehicle. Captain Khan and his family made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. However, being a Muslim family who immigrated to the United States, the Khan family is the very type of family presidential nominee Donald Trump seeks to ban should he become president, leading to Mr. Khan to question Trump’s knowledge of the U.S. Constitution in his moving remarks.
However, shortly after Mr. Khan’s speech, Trump spoke out against the family. Not only did he himself compare his business empire to a sacrifice along the lines of losing a child, he also questioned Mrs. Khan’s silence and insinuated that her religion forbids her from speaking. Such a remark is not only ignorant of the Muslim faith, but also ignorant of a Gold Star Mother’s grief. In recent days, Donald Trump has continued to attack the Gold Star Family, going so far as to say that Mr. Khan is only upset with him due to his policy on keeping terrorism out of the country.
Politicians on both sides have condemned Donald Trump’s remarks. However, top Republicans in Congress continue to support their candidate, including Speaker of the House Paul Ryan. Congressman Ryan has repudiated Trump’s comments, in addition to the handful of other ignorant and disrespectful remarks Trump has made (though without using his name). However, he has not revoked his endorsement. Sign the petition to let Paul Ryan know that Trump’s most recent remarks have gone too far and it is time to put decency and country before party.
Dear Speaker Paul Ryan,
In the year since Donald Trump has announced his candidacy for President of the United States, he has called Mexicans “rapists,” has asked for a “total and complete shutdown” of Muslim immigrants, has verbally attacked numerous women, has advocated for violence at his rallies, has revoked credentials of press outlets that dare to question him, has insinuated our president has ties to terrorism, thanks his supporters after a horrible terrorist attack on our nation’s soil, and most recently has attacked Mr. and Mrs. Khan, a Gold Star Family, after they demonstrated their First Amendment right to voice their concern over Mr. Trump’s controversial policies.
In his most recent remarks, Mr. Trump has shown complete ignorance and disregard for the Muslim faith and the grief a mother and father have experienced after the loss of their child, a young man who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. Mr. Trump insinuated that Mrs. Khan’s religion forbid her from speaking. He also compared his business ventures, which have earned him millions of dollars, to a sacrifice. While you have repudiated Mr. Trump’s remarks, you have yet to revoke your endorsement.
You continue to reject and condemn the ignorant, hateful, and bigoted remarks Mr. Trump seems to make every other week. You claim such remarks have no place in the Republican Party. However, by not revoking your endorsement of the presidential candidate, you continue to indirectly support Mr. Trump’s statements. These remarks not only have no place in the Republican Party, they have no place in American society. I urge you to un-endorse Mr. Trump and send a message to a deeply divided American people: that decency, kindness, understanding, and what is best for the country must come before political party.
