Target: Ric Odom, CEO of SPCA New Zealand
Goal: Don’t sell baked goods that include ingredients from abused farm animals in order to raise money for pets.
It is sadly paradoxical that an organization helping domestic animals is raising funds by selling the products of farmed animals’ suffering. SPCA New Zealand’s annual Cupcake Day fundraiser is asking communities to bake and sell sweet treats to raise funds for the SPCA’s work with neglected and abandoned animals. While the charity’s great work deserves all the support it can get, its fundraising initiatives should not involve animal suffering.
Eggs and dairy are obtained at great cost to the animals that produce them. Layer hens are kept confined to cages or huge packed sheds, if they are “free-range,” their entire lives. They are also painfully de-beaked and forced to lay eggs until their production wanes. They are then slaughtered. Male chicks born to the industry are considered useless and are therefore gassed or ground up alive at birth. Dairy cows have calf after calf torn away from them so that farmers can pump and sell their milk. Meanwhile the calves are sent to slaughter at just a few days old.
The SPCA’s work caring for and rehoming countless lost pets is no doubt commendable, but it should be aligning its events with its animal protection agenda by not inciting supporters to buy products derived from animal cruelty. Sign this petition urging the SPCA to distribute vegan cupcake recipes instead, which are delicious and easy to make, to ensure the money raised and used to care for cats and dogs does not come from abusing and killing innocent chickens and cows.
Dear Mr. Odom,
The SPCA has been involved in various campaigns to ease animal suffering in industrial farming. Therefore, it should not be inciting supporters to participate in animal abuse by baking goods containing eggs and dairy for the charity’s annual Cupcake Day fundraiser. You are no doubt aware that chickens and cows are horrifically mistreated by the egg and dairy industries and countless male chicks and calves are slaughtered each year because they are deemed useless.
Instead of encouraging supporters to bake with these products, I urge you to use your influence to help curb all animal abuse by encouraging the public to bake goods free of animal products. There are countless delicious recipes for vegan cupcakes the SPCA could be distributing to ensure that the money you are receiving comes from products that aren’t obtained from abusing animals.
