Ban Shark Nets to Protect the Great White from Extinction

Target: South Africa President Jacob Zuma

Goal: Ban the use of shark nets in South Africa to stop the unnecessary killing of great white sharks and halt their imminent extinction in the region.

The great white shark population in the South African waters is hurtling toward total extinction. The unnecessary use of shark nets is contributing to this devastating trend despite their proved inefficacy. Shark nets are placed around beaches with the intention of protecting humans and preventing attacks from great white sharks, yet instead sharks and other marine mammals become entangled in the nets and are cruelly left starve and die.

The use of shark nets as a method of protection from attacks came into popularity in the 1950s. However, these shark nets do not form complete barriers and allow sharks and other creatures perceived as dangerous to swim above or below the nets, having little success keeping beaches and coastal waters free from these animals.

This has become a costly and ineffective use of government time and resources. These nets entangle sharks, including the endangered great white shark, along with turtles, dolphins and other sea life and leave them to starve or be murdered by fishermen who pull them in.

Since the implementation of these poorly conceived shark nets, the population of great white sharks internationally has been in terrible decline. We must now acknowledge that shark nets have no effect on shark attacks on humans. Sign our petition to demand the end of their use in order to protect the great white shark and countless other marine animals these nets kill.

Dear President Zuma,

We must immediately ban the use of all shark nets in the waters surrounding South Africa. While well intentioned, these nets have been proven to be useless for the protection of humans and are instead entangling great white sharks and various other marine mammals and subjecting them to slow, painful deaths. This practice is inhumane and ineffective.

Great white sharks are at serious risk of becoming extinct in South Africa. The unintended consequences of shark nets have now outweighed the perceived benefits and it is time to stop the practice. The great white shark is an integral part of South African culture and more importantly, an irreplaceable part of the local ecosystem. To allow their extinction would be to allow the disappearance of the predator at the top of the food chain and the consequences of their absence would reverberate across the entire oceanic region.

We ask you to consider these dire consequences of great white shark extinction and put forth any conservation methods you can employ. This effort should begin with the immediate ban of shark nets in South Africa.
