Target: Director of Caricuao Zoo
Goal: Transfer starving animals to other zoos where they will have adequate food.
A number of animals at Venezuela’s Caricuao Zoo have perished due to starvation and inadequate nutrition. Sign our petition and demand that the zoo make arrangements to transfer the animals to other facilities until it can provide for them again.
Venezuela is in the middle of a widespread famine, and many families have been forced to ration their own foods as well. Given the circumstances, few people have responded to the zoo’s desperate requests for leftover foods. Many animals are being fed foods that are entirely inappropriate for their diets–such as mangoes and pumpkins for lions, which are carnivores–and some of the deceased animals had not eaten for two weeks prior to their deaths.
Despite having lost about 50 animals in six months, the zoo has no apparent plans to transfer the animals to other facilities. Releasing them into the wild is not considered a feasible option, given that the animals are all used to being fed and cared for by zookeepers. However, it is clear that something must be done so that all the animals are not cruelly starved to death. Sign the petition and urge the zoo to make transfer arrangements for its animals.
I am writing to urge you to make arrangements to transfer the animals of Caricuao Zoo to other zoos that can provide for them while Venezuela is in the midst of famine. The situation at the zoo is clearly dire, with 50 animals starving to death over the past six months, and I hope you will do what’s best for these living creatures by sending them somewhere they can be fed and cared for.
The famine in Venezuela has obviously hit humans hard as well. Many families have been forced to ration their own food, which makes the zoo’s requests for scraps unrealistic. Additionally, the food that is available is often inappropriate for the animals it is fed to–for instance, mangoes and pumpkins will not provide lions with adequate nutrition.
The solution is clear. Caricuao Zoo must make arrangements to transfer the animals to other zoos, most likely in bordering countries, where they can be properly fed and cared for. Please do what is best for the animals under your care and make these arrangements as quickly as possible.
