Drop Charges Against Chelsea Manning for Attempted Suicide

Target: Secretary of the Army Eric Fanning

Goal: Drop the ridiculous charges against imprisoned whistleblower Chelsea Manning for attempting suicide.

Persecuted whistleblower Chelsea Manning is facing a number of trumped-up charges for attempting suicide in prison. Manning has reportedly faced significant abuse while in custody after being convicted for blowing the whistle on illegal government activity, including being placed in a men’s prison despite the fact that she’s a trans woman. It’s no surprise that she’s suicidal.

Manning is facing indefinite solitary confinement for the rest of her 30-year term. Long term solitary confinement has been called torture by health experts as it produces severe emotional distress and permanent changes in the brain. This is a horrible thing to do to someone who survived a suicide attempt that was made because of her emotional distress.

The charges against her are also completely ridiculous. She is being charged with “resisting the force cell move team” despite the fact that she was unconscious at the time and “conduct which threatens” because apparently trying to quietly take one’s life in a single cell puts the entire prison at risk.

Supporters of Manning have pointed out that her ill treatment from prison authorities is likely an attempt to intimidate future potential whistleblowers. Either way, an attempted suicide is a sign that someone is in dire need to help, not a reason to punish them and make them even more miserable. Sign our petition to demand that these absurd charges be dropped and that Manning is given the mental health treatment she desperately needs.

Dear Secretary Fanning,

More abuses and absurd charges are reportedly being leveled against Chelsea Manning, the prisoner who was convicted for blowing the whistle on governmental crimes–this time because she attempted to take her own life. She likely did so due to facing a long sentence in an all-male prison despite the fact that she’s a woman, yet instead of getting help and support, she’s being punished and threatened with years of solitary confinement.

Solitary confinement is tantamount to torture. Mental health experts have found that it causes severe trauma and permanent brain damage. It’s the last thing that should be done to someone in so much emotional distress that they attempt suicide. The charges leveled against her also make no sense. How could she resist the force cell move team if she was unconscious?

We demand that all charges against Chelsea Manning related to her attempted suicide be immediately dropped and that she is given the mental health treatment she clearly needs.

Just since when is someone, or ANYone for that matter, arrested/charged for attempting to commit suicide??!!

  2. Rhona LaBruzzo says:

All prisons need to double check their use of solitary. Some people live to be with others, some hate it. How is she being charged with resisting wwhen she was unconscious? Get your acts together. Whistleblowers deserve to be honored.

When the “incident” concerning “the toothpaste” and her being denied legal counsel and access to the prison library for her “additional court martial” appeared in the Guardian,(UK edition) I attempted to make a very small contribution to her legal defense fund. So I naively went to the Gender Studies Department at the University of Texas at Austin. Not only did they NOT(?)know or want to know anything about Chelsea they were “disgusting little snots!”! In fact, if one was ever sympathetic to their “so-called cause” after dealing with them and especially with the little Latino/male?(very snide), one would walk out of there and join the “other” side!!! I was finally able to make, I hope, an unnamed donation(I hope it got there!)in a plain unadorned envelope. At this time there was also a Gay Pride Festival going on(repeat the above scenario/add a lot of snark) and the cost of the admission to this so-called festival would have been more than my paltry “little” donation of $5.00.
