Stop Breaking Promises to Protect First Nations Peoples From Dams

Hydroelectric dam

Target: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

Goal: Keep promises to Canadian First Nations tribes by revoking issued permits to build massive hydroelectric dam.

Permits to build a disruptive hydroelectric dam have been quietly issued by the Canadian government in spite of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s promises to build a relationship with First Nations tribes and protect the environment. The $8.8 billion dollar dam planned for the Peace River in British Columbia will flood farmlands and disrupt fisheries belonging to the Indigenous peoples in the area and cause massive damage to the ecosystems of local plant and animal species.

The fact that this was done quietly and without consulting First Nations tribes that would be affected by this dam shows that Trudeau’s administration knows they’re doing something wrong. The tribes who live along Peace River have plainly said “no” to this dam and human rights organizations like Amnesty International have called for all construction to be halted.

Prime Minister Trudeau has been hailed as a champion of marginalized peoples and the environment, but now his administration is breaking explicit promises he made during his campaign for the sake of an unnecessary and destructive dam. Canada should be investing in less disruptive power sources like solar and wind energy. Sign our petition to demand Trudeau revoke all permits for the construction of this dam and ensure that the entire project is shut down.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prime Minister Trudeau,

Your administration reportedly issued a batch of permits for the construction of a hydroelectric dam in Peace River in British Columbia without consulting the First Nations tribes that will be affected by it. This blatantly goes against the promises you made during your campaign for Prime Minister in which you said you would build relationships with the Indigenous peoples of Canada.

You must be aware that this dam will flood First Nations farmlands and fisheries. It will have a significant and irreversible detrimental effect on their livelihoods. You’ve also pledged to be a champion for the environment, and hydroelectric dams are known for their extreme disruptions of local ecosystems. Land and marine animals will find their homes utterly altered and many are likely to die.

You’ve been praised for your humanitarianism, support of marginalized communities, and environmentalism. You’re currently throwing all of that away for the sake of a single dam which is an outdated form of energy production. Solar and wind energy are available options that don’t involve breaking promises. Please revoke these permits, halt all construction, and work toward fulfilling the pledges you made during your campaign.

Sincerely,
