Target: CNN President Jeff Zucker, MSNBC President Philip T. Griffin, New York Times Editor Dean Baquet, The Washington Post Editor Martin Baron
Goal: Pressure Donald Trump to release his tax returns before the election just like every other presidential candidate since 1976.
Donald Trump is still refusing to release his tax returns to the public, breaking promises to do so. He claims that this is because he’s being audited, but there is nothing preventing or discouraging a person from releasing tax returns during an audit. In fact, the only concern people have about releasing tax returns to the public is that it can trigger an audit, so now is a perfect time for Trump to do so.
Trump has said himself that he has received “very little” pressure to release this information. According to recent analysis, this appears to be true. Mainstream news media outlets have put out around half the number of stories on Trump’s refusal to release his tax returns as the did on former presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s similar refusal.
This is baffling considering the fact that Trump has actively flaunted his disrespect for the nation’s tax codes in front of national audiences. Just two months ago, he said on the popular morning show Good Morning America that he fights “very hard to pay as little tax as possible.” His claim to wealth has also be called into question.
Trump will clearly never release this essential information that helps paint a picture of a candidate’s honesty, integrity, and business sense unless it’s hurting him to refuse. The best way for this refusal to hurt his campaign is to get news outlets to cover the issue. Sign our petition to urge multiple highly popular news companies to step up their game and start seriously pressuring Donald Trump to release his tax returns.
Dear Mr. Zucker, Mr. Griffin, et al.,
As you should be well aware, Donald Trump is still refusing to release his tax returns so that the public can have a better idea about whether he’s anything close to qualified and appropriate for the presidency. Trump himself has said that he’s received “very little” pressure to do so, and it appears that news outlets like yourself are indeed giving only half the attention to this issue as you gave to Romney’s tax returns.
Trump is never going to release his tax returns unless there are consequences for not doing so. You have a responsibility to keep important political candidates like this honest. We demand that you start adequately covering Trump’s failure to release his returns and continue putting on the pressure until he does so. The future of the entire nation is at stake.
