Target: George Brandis, Attorney General of Australia

Goal: Shut down an allegedly abusive juvenile detention center and prosecute its workers.

Children are being tortured and abused at a juvenile detention center in Australia’s Northern Territories, reports claim. Footage from the “Four Corners” investigative program shows children bound and kept in solitary confinement. Demand justice for these innocent children.

It is being called Guantanamo Bay-style treatment. Video footage appears to show children at the Don Dale center stripped naked, assaulted, tear gassed, and kept in isolation. An 11-year-old boy reportedly had a hood placed over his head and his limbs shackled to a chair when he threatened to harm himself. The footage also reportedly captures a guard stating that he will “pulverize” a child.

This reported abuse amounts to child torture and must be punished to the maximum degree. Sign below and take a stand against child abuse.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Attorney General Brandis,

An investigation into the Don Dale juvenile detention center found that children are being tortured and abused. This is unacceptable. We demand the maximum penalty for all involved in this alleged abuse.

A shocking video shows a teenage boy being thrown onto a cot and stripped naked. Later, he is bound to a mechanical chair with a hood over his head. This punishment reportedly came after he threatened to harm himself.

This is no way to treat a child. We demand the immediate shut down of this facility and criminal charges brought against all who are involved in this horrific abuse.

Sincerely,

  1. Michele Francis says:

Stop the abuse of children. They need mental assessments, councillors and physiologists not torture.
All the adults involved must be sacked now. Immediately. They obviously don’t have any training.

  2. Rosslyn Osborne says:

Shocked and ashamed to live in this country at this time. Many answers needed as to why this heinous treatment was allowed to happen to another human being, by those who were supposed to be looking after their welfare?

  3. The shocking abuse of children in detention demand nation-wide investigation. I call upon PM Malcolm Turnbull to ensure an extensive inquiry into all detention centres!

The repercussions on juveniles of this abuse is clear: abusive treatment has serious effects both on the victim and on society. For the victim, the effects of physical abuse, mental and emotional anguish causes addictions, such as drugs, alcohol and self-harm. The cost of social dysfunction to the victim and to the community, as a whole, is unsustainable.

Abused juveniles are more likely to fall victim to recidivism and an increased jail population and social dysfunction, as a consequence.

Throughout our nation, State and church institutions were the cause of sexual abuse to children. As adults, these victims are now rightfully calling for compensation. The same is required for kids being subjected to physical abuse and mental and emotional anguish caused within the walls of juvenile detention.

The concept that any functional society could or would deliberately cause malfunction to the entire community is irrational. The cost to society of perpetrating abuse is HUGE!

TROUBLED CHILDREN SHOULD NOT PLACED INTO JAIL CELLS. JUVENILE DETENTION CENTRES MUST PROVIDE A HOME-STYLE ENVIRONMENT WITH COUNSELLING AND PROFESSIONAL HEALTH CARE FACILITIES FOR THOSE WHO SELF-HARM.
