Target: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
Goal: Open an official criminal investigation into allegations of sexual and physical abuse of first nations children at the Immaculata Catholic School.
Sixty First Nations people have alleged that they experienced or witnessed physical, sexual, or verbal abuse by the former CEO of the Vancouver Olympics, John Furlong. These allegations stem from Mr. Furlong’s time as a physical education teacher at the Immaculata Catholic School during the 1960s and 70s.
The Assembly of First Nations, Canada’s largest indigenous advocacy group, has called for an investigation into these allegations. However, the federal government has as of yet refused, citing a ruling in favor of Furlong in a civil case. However, in that case the affidavits and testimonies of victims were not considered as evidence. Furthermore, there were at least 50 factual errors in the ruling, as well as accusations that the victims and witnesses were suffering from “false memory syndrome.” Sign our petition and demand a full and transparent investigation into these allegations against both Furlong and Immaculata.
Dear Prime Minister Trudeau,
I was shocked to hear that the federal government has of yet refused to investigate the allegations against John Furlong and the Immaculata Catholic School. Over 60 people have alleged that they experienced or witnessed sexual, physical, or verbal abuse by Furlong during his time teaching at Immaculata. These claims have never been tested in court, and recommendations to open further investigations made in the Serious Crimes Unit’s report on the matter have been ignored.
In response to calls to investigate this matter, the sole response by the government of Canada relied on a ruling in a civil case where affidavits and testimonies by alleged victims were not admitted as evidence. Despite the fact that this evidence was not admitted, the judge opined that the accusers were experiencing false memory syndrome. Given the number of people independently alleging abuse, this seems unlikely. I urge you to open an independent and transparent investigation into these allegations.
