Target: Scott Berkowitz, President and Founder of Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network
Goal: Increase support for male victims and survivors of sexual and domestic assault.
It is not just women who suffer from sexual and domestic assault and violence; men can just as easily be raped, sexually harassed, or abused by their romantic partners. In fact, there have been many cases of male victims that went unchecked due to an unfair bias. Men who are assaulted are derided as “sissies” or mocked for being unable to fight back, even when they legitimately have no means to do so or are justifiably too afraid to raise a hand against their attacker. Men are often afraid to come forward and report their assault due to the stigma against male victims.
For decades, we lived with the stereotype that only women could be the victims of domestic abuse, rape, and sexual harassment. The media is still saturated with books and movies in which women are hapless waifs victimized by evil men, powerless to stop their abuse unless they call another man for help or do something extreme like murder their abuser. Public service announcements and films about assault and rape are geared toward women.
This is highly unbalanced. While the fight against violence aimed at women is a noble cause, we must remember that it is just as possible for a man to be a victim, and that these men need our support too. We must stop mocking or dismissing male victims of rape, abuse, and assault and ensure they get the support and counseling they need. Sign this petition to demand a more balanced fight against rape and abuse.
Dear Mr. Berkowitz,
Male victims of rape and assault are not getting as much support as they should be, due to society’s warped image of manhood and the idea that only women can be victims. Any human being can be a target of sexual violence or domestic abuse, and anyone who has suffered such things deserves to get all the help they need to recover from them.
Please start discouraging the pre-concevied notions and stereotypes we have lived with for far too long. Start speaking out in defense of male victims, to encourage them to come forward so that they can get the help they need. Society has too many problems with sexism and unbalanced gender biases even in this day and age, and we need to stamp out this particularly harmful one.
