End Shark Fishing Tournaments

Target: Dan Ashe, Director U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Goal: Put a stop to cruel and inhumane “monster fishing” tournaments.

Hunting competitions in which contestants kill sharks have been a staple on the Atlantic coast for decades, but activists have been increasing their calls to end this barbaric tradition. Known as “monster fishing,” this practice must be stopped immediately, before shark populations are irreparably damaged.

In the past year, there were 71 tournaments along the Atlantic coast, 28 of which targeted sharks exclusively. Commonly-hunted species include the short fin mako, porbeagle, and thresher shark. The porbeagle is listed as “endangered” by The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), while the thresher and shortfin mako are “vulnerable,” only one level above endangered.

Rather than use humane means of capture, participants use jagged J-shaped hooks that seriously wound their targets. As a result, every shark captured is left for dead, even if a hunter does not elect to use it in the tournament. Regardless of an animal’s conservation status, humans should not have the right to hunt and kill simply for recreation. These are living, breathing creatures that deserve respect. Sign the petition below to demand an end to these vicious tournaments.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Ashe,

I am writing to call your attention to the brutal and barbaric tradition of “monster fishing” tournaments. Taking place along the Atlantic coast, these outings feature the needless slaughter of several species of endangered and vulnerable sharks.

Whether or not an animal is endangered, humans should not be allowed to hunt and kill simply for sport and recreation. Sharks are entitled to the same basic rights as any other species. Please put an end to this savage trend of violence immediately.

Sincerely,

I swear the Fish and Wildlife Service wants to wipe out every living creature we have! Why? They are an animal’s worst nightmare.

WHAT SAD LIVES THESE PEOPLE MUST HAVE IF KILLING SOMETHING IS HOW THEY SPEND THE FREE TIME, SHAME THEY CANNOT DO SOMETHING GOOD WITH THEIR TIME, LIKE SAVE ANIMALS.

  3. BAN THESE CRUEL SHARK HUNTING TOURNAMENTS NOW. MUST SAVE THE SHARKS FROM EXTINCTION.

  4. Abolish the barbarity

I swear people have become so cold and callous towards living creatures. Seems it ok to torture and kill for entertainment, sport, charity or contests. THIS NEEDS TO STOP! Sharks are living, breathing animals who feel pain just like we do. Stop this tournament at once. Stop teaching kids that its ok to kill for fun!
