Target: Barnaby Joyce, Australian Minister of Agriculture
Goal: Ban the cruel process of macerating, gassing and otherwise killing live male chicks in the egg industry.
Graphic footage showing baby chickens being shredded to death in an egg hatchery has renewed calls for this widespread practice to be banned. Animal Liberation and Aussie Farms released the footage, allegedly taken at a Melbourne egg production facility called Specialised Breeders Australia, which shows day-old male chicks on a conveyor belt, falling into a maceration machine. Egg producers consider male chicks “useless,” as they cannot lay eggs, and they are therefore destroyed shortly after hatching. This happens in the wide majority of egg farms, through grinding, gassing or suffocation in crates and trash bags.
However, this is the first time this barbaric process has been captured on film in Australia, helping the country’s residents realize the cruelty that each egg carton they purchase is funding. This practice occurs in egg production in most countries around the world, and is still legal, despite being incredibly inhumane. Germany will soon introduce technology that will identify the sex of chicken embryos before they hatch. However, this won’t prevent female chicks from suffering mistreatment, confinement, and death when their production wanes.
Sign this petition urging Australia to ban the culling of male chicks and encourage businesses and consumers to move away from egg production altogether in favor of cruelty-free alternatives.
Dear Mr. Joyce,
Shocking footage allegedly from the Melbourne hatchery Specialised Breeders Australia shows day-old chicks being brutally destroyed by being pushed through a maceration machine. Despite its cruelty, this practice is still legal and widely used in egg production across the country.
It is unacceptable that this is still taking place in the 21st century. Please follow in Germany’s footsteps and introduce technology to identify the sex of chicks before they are hatched so that no more innocent male chicks suffer this brutal end. In the long term, the government should also encourage business and consumers to move away from egg production, replacing it with sustainable and humanely produced plant-based foods instead.
