Target: GameStop CEO J. Paul Raines
Goal: Demand GameStop pull its support and funding for Autism Speaks.
Autism Speaks is an organization that seemingly does not understand the cause it claims to be raising awareness of. Several years back, its promotional film “I Am Autism” caused controversy and anger by characterizing autism as a disease that ruins lives and needs to be cured; in actuality, autism and its spectrum are lifelong disorders that people must learn to manage and live with in their day to day lives. In addition, only a very small amount of the funds (about three percent) received by the company are reportedly put toward anything autism-related.
One of the organization’s biggest supporters is GameStop, a highly successful and popular video game store chain. It donates at least $1 million a year to Autism Speaks. Unfortunately, this does not sit well with the company’s consumer base. Many GameStop customers were horrified to learn that the company gives so much money to an organization that entirely misses the point of its supposed cause and is accused of barely using any of its funds for related matters.
GameStop does not realize what it is supporting. It does not realize that only a tiny portion of the great sums of money it gives to Autism Speaks may actually go towards autism-related matters. Not only is Autism Speaks offensively inaccurate, it is seemingly dishonest. It spreads inaccuracy and furthers the stigma against those on the spectrum, and it may not even use most of the money it is given toward its supposed cause. Sign this petition to demand GameStop cease its funding of Autism Speaks.
Dear Mr. Raines,
You donate over $1 million to Autism Speaks every year, which in theory is a noble goal. However, the truth is that only a small portion of what you give them reportedly goes towards funding autism-related matters. In addition, Autism Speaks does not seem to understand autism at all, it treats it like a disease that needs to be cured and claims it ruins lives. It is an organization founded on misconceptions.
Please pull your support and funding from this organization now. By giving it as much funding as you are, you are enabling it to further spread harmful misconceptions about the autism spectrum and cause pain for those on it. Do not give this organization one more cent.
