Tell Target to Stop Letting Seals Starve for Krill Oil

A ribbon seal pup (probably 5 days old and 15kg) rests while researchers finish sampling his mother.

Target: Target CEO, Brian Cornell

Goal: Save seals, whales and penguins by halting all sales of Antarctic krill supplements.

The Antarctic krill supplement industry is killing seals, whales and penguins by stealing their main food source, krill. The fish supplement industry has become a multibillion dollar industry in the last few years with 100,000 tons of fish oil being consumed. Even though the claims of improving heart health have since been proven false by the Journal of American Medical Association, the industry continues to thrive putting the ecosystem of the Antarctic in jeopardy. Antarctic seals exist in a delicate balance with their ecosystem. The rapidly changing Antarctic environment is upsetting this balance, causing changes to seal habitats and threatening krill, a small shrimp-like crustacean. This growing interest in fishing for krill could further disrupt Antarctic ecosystems if we don’t stop the demand for krill oil fish supplements.

Target carries several brands of krill supplements including MegaRed, which proudly states that their supplements are sourced 100% from the Antarctic. Their claims that these fish are sourced sustainably cannot be true, since the numbers of krill are dwindling quickly leaving hungry seals, penguins and whales to suffer.

Krill are also facing an uphill battle from ocean acidification and warming temperatures destroying their habitat, but they don’t stand a chance as long as we continue to fish them in rising quantities. Let’s protect them, and the seals, whales and penguins that depend upon them, by taking a stand against the krill oil supplement industry and demand Target take all krill supplement products off of their shelves now.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr Cornell,

As a leader and influencer in the corporate world, we ask that you please take all Antarctic krill supplements off of your shelves immediately. The sale of these supplements are increasing the damage being done to the Antarctic, depleting the ocean of an important food source to seals, whales, penguins and other antarctic animals. The success of the krill supplement industry is encouraging the further destruction of this fragile ecosystem. While claims are being made that these fish are being sourced sustainably, the numbers are proving otherwise. The number of krill in the Antarctic is dwindling rapidly, and they are vital to the ecosystem.

These supplements do not provide any proven health benefits, and the same omega-3 oil can be easily sourced from plants or sustainably farmed fish. Please be a leader in this fight to protect the Antarctic, its wildlife and its fragile ecosystem and stop selling Antarctic krill supplements. You can help us make a difference.

Sincerely,
