Target: Joseph R. Sivewright, CEO of Purina
Goal: Demand the Purina pet food company provide cats with the meat they need in their food.
Most of the Purina brand’s dry food brands list corn as their first ingredient, which is bad news for cats. Purina is one of the top selling and most advertised brands of pet food, but these ingredients lists do not live up to its hype. The first ingredient in any pet food, wet or dry, should be real meat. Not by-products, not fillers, but real poultry, beef, or fish.
Cats are carnivores, meaning they need as much meat as possible in their diet. Any food that contains more corn than meat is not going to benefit a cat nutritionally and could lead to obesity, especially since dry food is already higher in carbohydrates than wet food. A cat’s digestive system is not meant to process grains and starches as easily as it does meat, which is why most vets recommend giving mostly wet food and saving dry food for a treat.
That said, this does not make dry food a health risk as cats can subsist on a diet of mostly dry food and still live long and healthy lives. However, this means all dry food brands should have meat as their primary ingredient, listed first on the package.
If you are going to feed your cat mainly dry food its first ingredient should be meat, not ground yellow corn. Purina’s dry food brands do not provide this. Sign this petition to demand Purina change its ways by revising its ingredients list and making sure meat is the number-one contributor.g
Dear Mr. Sivewright,
Many of your dry cat food brands list corn as their first ingredient. Corn is not part of a cat’s natural diet, as cats in the wild and in general need the proteins and amino acids in meat to survive more than they do grains. An excess of grains in dry food can lead to health problems and obesity.
Your brands are among the biggest sellers in dry cat food, but your ingredients list does not live up to what consumers expect when they see your advertisements. Your company should be more aware of this. Please start using more natural meat products in your dry food brands, and make sure they are the first ingredients listed and the primary ingredients used. The health of cats everywhere depends on this change.
